How to get a record deal
presented by
The National Acadamy Of Songwriters
Video tape about "How to get a RECORD DEAL?!"
priced at £14.95 from Shofron/esra productions.
Reviewed for
AM/FM
by Nigel Mark Parker
With a list of artists and producers including ::
Mark Knopfler Mick Fleetwood Kris Kristofferson Cesar Rosas
Jody Watley Randy Newman Karla Bonoff Jeff SKUNK Baxter
Michel Bolton Chick Corea Robert Lamm Wesley Hein
Phil Collins Gregory Abbot Janis Ian Stephen Powers
Kenny Logging Barry White Billy Vera Phil Ramone
This tape is very poor
The problem seems to be if you ask an artist "Why do you think you got signed
on a record record label" and they will answer "
Because I put lots of
songs on my DEMO CD and had each one different (one ballad, one rock, one was
reggie , one punk....) to show them the different arrangements I could make
ask a record company A&R rep what makes a good demo you get "
No more
than 4 songs on a tape if youre a rock band only play rock dont put on a slow
ballad!! be consistent, dont spend money on pressing CD's and a big studio it
is the roughness we want to hear, our producers can handle the technical bits
all we want to hear is a good song
"!?????!???***?*???*???!"?!?"
HOW THE HELL DOES ANY ONE GET SIGNED ?
The tape then goes on contradicting itself to the end 67 minutes of pure trash
There is no real conclusion so to save you £14.95 here it is ::::
If you are doing a demo sent a Cassette of good quality "CHROME" a lot of
A&R men only have time to listen to tapes in the "car"! it is often assistents
who listen to the thousands of tapes that flood a record company every week
young apprentices who pick out the GOOD from the BAD, The cover should be of
Good ish quality NEATLY hamd written if that is all you can afford! and a
picture of the band and NEATLY written Biography go down well too.
Free tickets to youre next live show ?!
Cuttings of press coverage !
The songs themselves should be realy grabbers you get about 10 yes 10 seconds
before its thrown or if youre lucky fast folwarded to the chorus. Make the 1st
song the strongest and the second second best and so on dont put rubish on!
it could be better to put 2 pure gob smackers on rather than 4 ok lift music
sunday morning stroll music.
ORIGIONALITY always is a grabber but dont go mad sampling the washing machine
and have a sampled cat singing a bass while a deoderant cat hissssssses out
for the hi-hats listen to whats in the charts Record Companys hate to chance
that washing machine for Take That. So if you need the cat bass tone it down
you can always push 1 new idea into 1 song but more than 1 is risky.
If you can find the name of the A&R rep then REGISTERED delivery is a good
safe bet with the rep having to sign for it ! GOOD IDEA ? well it may get his
or her curiosity going..
Save youre money and follow the above much more usefull guidelines
Now where has that cat gone................
